Prologue

Prologue

On the steamy banks of the Ohio River sits the mid-sized industrial town of Evansville, Indiana across from Kentucky. Post WWII, a young married couple, both only high school graduates, and one of whom was a decorated veteran, made their way to Southern Indiana to build a new life and raise their family. Armed with little more than their intelligence and optimism, they set about providing a simple, yet richer life for their four children. With tenacity and grit these two parents embarked on their journey with creative determination.

In a small brick house, bordering the cornfields of the state mental hospital, their two, then three, then four children were exposed to nature, music, literature, sports, a gentle humanity, and many other ordinary and extraordinary experiences. They lived their lives with love, humor, grace, wisdom, and unique strangeness.  From the frozen ponds of Woodmere Asylum to the handshake from “The Killer” himself, those never-to-be forgotten memories of childhood began-The Fabulous Fifties, Homemade Gastronomical Delights, Entertainment in the Non-digital Age, Memory Keeping and Sporting Adventures filled their children’s lives-waiting to be cherished always.
